Pioneer Mining Man Is Dead; Was Prominent for Many Years in Community.
William A. McFarlane, age 75, for many years widely known resident of San Bernardino, and who with his three brothers (Andrew, John and Thomas) opened up the Ivanpah silver mines from which they put _?_,000,000 in circulation in this county, died at 6 o’clock last evening after a long illness. For 10 years he had been an invalid in a hospital.
Mr. Mcfarlane is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie McFarlane, of 581 C (?) Street.
_?_ was born in Jackson County, IA., _?_ in 1845, and was a relative of Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition that explored the west in the early days of the nation. Educated in the primitive log school house of the frontier, he managed to acquire a broad knowledge, despite the meager facilities of the schools of those days. During the spring of 1865 he crossed the plains with a freighting expedition, leaving Iowa and following the customary route along the Platte and through Cheyenne pass. When he started on the journey he had hired as driver of a team of mules, but it soon developed that he was an expert shot. Accordingly he was taken from the _?_ and appointed hunter for the _?_. With the aid of his gun he supported the large party during the entire _?_ with an abundance of wild game, including bear and deer. The first _?_ in California was made at San Bernardino, from which point he proceeded to Los Angeles and thence to _?_ County, where his brothers were mining. In that county, he engaged in _?_er, mulch and quartz mining for a number of years, meanwhile meeting with fair success. During 1869 he went to White Pine, Nev., where he _?ed in silver mining for a time, _?_ the fall of the same year he _?_ to Kern County.
From 1870 to 1872 he engaged in _?_ mining at Ivanpah, being associated with his brothers, John, Thomas and Andrew McFarlane.
_?_ McFarlane did very valuable _?_ work in San Bernardino _?_. In 1872 he established his _?_ San Bernardino. He had mining interests in various sections. He married in this city. He won the friendship of a large circle of acquaintances and was influential in the community.
The funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 3 o’clock, Friday afternoon. It is insisted there be no flowers except from the family. Rev. Alvah Grant Fes_?den will officiate. Stephens & Son are in charge.
