Henry stewart was born in Liberty County, Georgia. He attended school at Chatham Academy, Savannah, GA and studied law with Judge Robert Milledge Charlton, one of Georgia's most famous jurists. He was admitted to the bar in 1843. About 1845 he went to Troupville, GA where he practiced law with Col Samuel Spencer and taught school. In 1848-1849 he was postmaster of Troupville. In 1846 he married Sallie Underwood, the daughter of John J. Underwood. In 1849 he moved to Hamilton county, FL. He practiced law and was a Senator in 1854. The 1860 Census shows him a slave owner of 6 slaves. When the Civil War began, he organized a company known locally as the Jasper Blues (Company 1, 2nd Fla. Infantry). He was elected Captain on July 13, 1861. He resigned his commission in the field due to ill health on May 10, 1862, and took a position in the Quartermaster Dept. in Florida. He was a Hamilton County Judge in the Circuit Court from 1865-1866 and a County Judge from 1872-1884. He was Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Florida in 1867-1868. His children were : Robert S. Stewart 1849-1927, Eugenia Charlton Stewart 1847-1942,and Ella Milledge Stewart 1857-1944.
