An outstanding worker for patriotic causes, Mrs. Adeline Grenda, of Gravelly Beach, will celebrate her 84th birthday anniversary today. A native of Germany, she arrived In Tasmania on the sailing ship Victoria, with her parents, who first settled at Swan Port, now Swansea.
The family later moved to Hobart, and when aged 21 years Mrs. Grenda married Mr. Charles Grenda, who also was an immigrant from Germany. With her husband, she settled on land at Pyengana, and subsequently moved to Mathinna and Scottsdale. Mr. Grenda died three years ago, and his wife is living with a daughter (Mrs. A. Williams), Gravelly Beach. A son, Alf. Grenda, was a world champion cyclist, and held eight records at one time, the distances varying from 1-3 miles to six-day titles. Another son, A.E. Grenda, for many years held the world record for chopping. On one occasion, three sons competed in a world championship chopping match, and filled second and third places. Five sons and three daughters are living, and each of the sons has been prominent in the athletic sphere.
Mrs. Grenda was renowned throughout Australia for her efforts for the A.I.F. during the Great War. For four years her output of knitted garments exceeded that of any other Red Cross worker. After purchasing the material, Mrs. Grenda knitted 225 pairs of socks, besides Balaclava helmets and scarfs. Since the outbreak of the present war, she has resumed her patriotic efforts for the comfort of Australian soldiers.
She is a prominent member of the Exeter branch of the Red Cross Society. She was well known for her benevolent work while a resident of Scottsdale. One son enlisted in the Great War. There are 29 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. A birthday party has been arranged by relatives and friends.

Williams) 31 Malvern Avenue, Glen Iris, Victoria. Mrs. Grenda was in her 96th year. The family were well-known in Scottsdale, where they resided for many years.
