They helped settle Provo , Manti , Parowan , Harmony , Virgin City , and Grafton , Utah . Alma always had a loyalty to the church and taught his children the value of the gospel. When they first married, the town of Panguitch was being settled, so Alma and Alice became some of the first settlers. They lived in a log cabin for nine years after which they built a substantial brick home and raised their eight children. Alma was a hard worker and it was said no weeds ever grew on Alma 's farm. He had one of the first automobiles in Garfield County , a 1912 Chalmers, which he won in a national catalog contest by selling the most farm equipment. He was active in local theatrical productions. He was superintendent of the Sunday School for 23 years after which he was called to the high council. It has been said that before the advent of the radio, he told a congregation that the time would come when they would be able to sit in their seats in their own remote chapels, not only hear, but also see the general conference from Salt Lake City .
