Diantha R. Gage identifies herself as the widow of Joseph S. Gage in her will, dated Apr. 27, 1906, in San Jose. She left her estate to her four children, Ella Belle Collister of Kansas City, Missouri; Charles E. French of Great Falls, Montana; Hiram E. French of Elk Point, South Dakota; and Will R. French of Austin, Texas. She also made a bequest to granddaughter Lois French, daughter Will R. French, of Estelline, South Dakota. (Santa Clara County probate records.)

This information leads back to Dyantha Roxana Truax who married Hiram Benjamin French in 1848 in Dunham, Quebec, Canada. They settled in Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa (1850-1880 census). Hiram B. French died Jan. 9, 1884 in Jackson County, Iowa. His will identifies his wife Dyantha R. French, daughter Ella Collister, and sons Will, Hiram, and Charles French.

The 1900 census of San Jose shows J. S. Gage (age 62, Maine, lawyer) and Mrs. D. R. Gage (age 66, French Canadian) living on S. 9th Street. Joseph S. Gage arrived in San Jose by 1887 when he was admitted to practice law. Note that his first wife, Emma, filed for divorce in 1892 in Henry County, Missouri (Henry County Republican, May 12, 1892, p.4).
