ANETA BUCHAAN
Aneta Garside Buchanan, 76, died June 29, 1993 at Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was born July 13, 1916 at Wyoming, Iowa.
Teaching was the dominant force in her life. Not limited to the classroom, her family was continuously subjected to her teaching and philosophies. As recounted in a letter to the editor of the Kalamazoo Gazette after a lengthy article about her retirement in 1983. Kathleen Coopes DeLong wrote of the continuous new experiences she received as a student in Mrs. Buchanan's second and third grade class.
The dedication shown to the educational process included sharing her home with a typical class of 30 students. No effort was too much to offer her students a new experience which would provide positive direction later in life. She described her leaving the classroom for a position as an elementary school principal as the most significant mistake in her life, and returned to the classroom at the earliest opportunity. It always gave her great pleasure when a former student wrote or visited her. She enjoyed knowing her former students as adults and meeting their children as well. Her 46 years in the classroom allowed her thesatisfaction of teaching second, and occasionally, third generations from some families.
The same dedication was given to the educational groups and social associations she belonged to. Delta Kappa Gamma, the Ladies Library Association, American Association of University Women, the Retired Teachers Association and the local, garden council all benefited from hercontinued support. Countless people were beneficiaries of Aneta's attention. At Christmas time, she and Jim delivered baskets containing fruitcakes, decorated match boxes and poinsettias. She was never too busy to visit, write a note, or make a call to a friend.
Her tireless energy also allowed her to care for her family. Whether it was learning to read, or picking berries, her family, including her grandchildren, were never in want of attention. She spent many hours at her favorite pastime, quilting. Everyone in the family has at least one cherished quilt, lovingly made especially for them, a symbol of the past, a part of the present, and her gift to the future.
A memorial service was held July 2, at Covenant Church with the Rev. Charles Anderson officiating.
