Major Vessie Earl Hardy, Jr.

Major Vessie Earl Hardy, Jr., 97 of Austin, Texas passed onto his heavenly home August 19, 2021.

Vessie was born February 8, 1924, in Terrell, Texas. He attended Wichita Falls High School and received his B.B.A. at Southern Methodist University. He was a member of the U. S. Armed Forces, serving in the U. S. Air Force as an A-20 Bomber Pilot during both World War II and The Korean War. He served 40 years in the military, with eight years of active duty and 32 years in the reserves. While in the Air Force, Vessie met the love of his love, Lola Jean Huston. They married June 16, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas. Vessie and Lola started their family shortly after and welcomed their daughter Sharon in 1953 and their son Ves in 1957. They lived in San Antonio where Vessie worked as an HR Manager for Sears. The family then moved to Austin in 1964 after Vessie was asked to head up the new Hancock Sears location as the Personnel Manager. They made Austin their permanent home, raising their children in the same house they live in to this day. He enjoyed a long career with Sears and eventually retired from the company. Afterwards, he continued to work part-time for Gage Furniture for several years.

Vessie had a great love of music, especially during the Big Band Era. So much so that he named his A-20 plane "OFFBEAT." He was a drummer and played in a band while in the military and then years later he was able to play in a local Austin Big Band with his son Ves, named The Herald Wood Orchestra. Fishing has always been a passion in the Hardy family. Starting when Vessie's father taught him, and he passed this tradition onto his son and grandson thereafter. Vessie enjoyed competing in casting and fishing tournaments and was a member of the San Antonio Anglers and Casting Fishing Club. Vessie loved spending time with his family. He had a knack for making people laugh with his one-of-a-kind jokes and would tell them to the family during gatherings. He was a kindhearted, gentle and loving person. Before his passing, Vessie and Lola had the incredible honor of celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary together. Vessie was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he will be missed dearly by all.

He is preceded in death by his son Ves Hardy, III, his father Vessie Earl Hardy, Sr., Mother Olga De Alva Wall Hardy and sister Helen Earle Hardy Kraybill. Vessie is survived by his wife Lola Jean, daughter Sharon Hardy Dowman (Mark), daughter in-law Dianne Hardy (Ves), five grandchildren (Kendra Edgecomb, Jennifer Hardy, Lisa Hardy, Casandra Robertson and Travis Hardy). Four great grand kids (Benjamin, Haleigh, Dianne and Noah).

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, August 28th at 11:00 AM at Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N Lamar Blvd Austin, TX 78752, 512-454-5611.
