Obituary: Canon City [Fremont Co., CO] Daily Record, 6/1/2007 - b. Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., CO

Oscar Gerald Ireland 101, died May 20, 2007. He was born May 5, 1906, in Colorado Springs to John Oscar and Mary Edith (Forshey) Ireland. He married Marjorie Carmen McCullough Feb. 15, 1928. The Ireland family homesteaded in Nesterville (north of Cotopaxi) in 1913. They moved to Cañon City in the 1920's then to eastern Colorado. In 1928, after his marriage to Marjorie, they went to Weldona to farm until 1935, when they returned to Cañon City. In addition to farming, other occupations he was involved with were thoroughbred horse breeding and racing, Ireland's Pool Hall and Ireland's Café and Bar and selling real estate.

He served Fremont County Zoning Board, volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce Tourist Cabins and delivered Meals on Wheels for 11 years. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie 2123, BPO Elks No. 610, IOOF Camp 7 and the Golden Age Center. He and his wife traveled in their air stream trailer, and belonged to the Wally Byam Airstream Club and Good Sams.

He is survived by daughters Donna Lee Chappell and Carol Geraldine (Keith) McNew; grandchildren, Ronda (Alan) McCoy, Jerry (Lisa) McNew, Linell (Jeff) Embry, Steven (Margie) McNew and Shelly (Alan) Kline; 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and siblings, Frances Imogene Jessup Corey, Walter Orville Ireland and Floyd Chilton Ireland.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2007, in Lakeside Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Crosby officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Golden Age Center, 728 Main St., Cañon City, CO 81212. Arrangements were handled by Holt Family Funeral Home.
