PETERSEN-Zelpha Petersen of Florence died July 18, 1999 at the age of 93. She was born Oct. 14, 1905, in Elmira, Oregon to Oscar and Maude Creson. On July 19, 1965, in Washoe County, Nevada, she married Elmore Petersen, who preceded her in death on Dec 24, 1994.
She lived on a farm in Noti, until she was age 18. She moved to Westlake, where she worked in the wooden crate mill at Booth, across Siltcoos Lake from Westlake. When the Booth community and the mill burned, the remaining buildings were floated across Siltcoos Lake to the Westlake area.
To assist with the family's income, Petersen went to work pulling on the green chain at the Gardiner Mill.Later she worked for many years as a grocery clerk for Kyles Grocery on Bay Street.
She was a longtime member of the Florence Christian Church and was active in the Dunes City Neighborhood Watch Program.
Petersen was a very outspoken lady with great faith in God, a quick wit, and a great sense of humor. Her memory remained most remarkable to the day of her demise.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a twin sister, Zella, two other sisters, three brothers, a son, and a step daughter.
She is survived by two step daughters, Louise McFerron of Post Falls, Idaho, and Glynnagean Doty of Prineville, and many nieces and nephews, and other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to the Florence Christian Church Youth Program.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 22, at 2 p.m. at Pacific Sunset Cemetery.
Burn's Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
