She was born in Salinas, California, to William Paul Sr. and Helen June (Shepherd) Cooper. She moved to McAlester as a young child and attended schools in McAlester. She later earned a bachelor degree in psychology and sociology from Southeastern State University in Durant in 1987. She worked for several years in the mental health field. She married Leroy Matney in 1988 in Haileyville. She died at her home in McAlester at the age of 42. She was preceded in death by her father, William Cooper Sr.; her grandparents, Clyde and Lucille Shepherd and Robert Lee and Sophia Cooper; her sisters-in-law, Marilyn Matney and Lynette Matney; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leroy Sr. and Doris Matney and several aunts and uncles.
