He married Edna Smith in 1931. When he was six years old, he wrote a letter to Santa that was printed in the Valparaiso Vidette-Messenger in 1906. He asked for, "a hobbyhorse & some nuts & candy" and he made a point of noting his Sunday school and school attendance, and that he was, at age 6, "a good boy."
