CHEBOYGAN - Ira B. Tarzwell, 92, of Cheboygan, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at Tendercare of Cheboygan. Ira was born Sept. 6, 1914 in Gladstone, Mich., and raised in Engadine, Mich., the son of Ernest and Dorothy (Cowan) Tarzwell. After moving to Detroit in 1927, he married Savilla W. Schultz in 1936, who passed away on March 22, 1956. While in Detroit from 1927-1947, Ira was employed at Farmcrest Bakery in maintenance, and later Whitehead and Kales, a tool and die shop. From 1947 to 1956, he was a partner in a dairy and potato farm in Petoskey, and then, in 1956, went to work for J.B. Lund and Sons in Cheboygan, retiring in 1976. On Oct. 27, 1956 in Cheboygan, he married Bernice Esh, who also preceded him in death on April 1996. He later married Frances Gray Jones on April 19, 1998 in Carp Lake. Ira was a very devoted Seventh Day Adventist, always willing to volunteer for anything needed by the church, or anyone else. He served as an Elder for many years, and was often found preparing for a sermon or Bible study class plinking on his antique typewriter. Ira enjoyed talking to people and especially giving Bible studies, having had 125 ongoing Bible studies at one time in the Cheboygan, Carp Lake and Pellston areas. He also raised many foster children over the years, beginning in 1948. He will also be remembered as the man with the good Florida fruit, taking the time to hand sort every orange and grapefruit to make sure it was the best. Ira was a member of the Cheboygan Seventh Day Adventist Church, and enjoyed gardening, remodeling, woodworking, and working with his hands. Ira will be truly and lovingly missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife Frances; a son, Randall (Marlene Artibee) Tarzwell of Greenville, S.C.; stepson, Harold (Kim) Jones of Harbor Springs, Mich.; four grandchildren, Judy Warbington of Gaylord, Mich., Sharon (Ellis) Warbington of Topeka, Kan., Kristin (Duane) Haney of Candler, N.C., and SSgt Scott Tarzwell, of Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina, currently serving in Baghdad, Iraq; a great-grandson, Charles 'David" Haney; a brother, Ernest Tarzwell of Benton Harbor, Mich.; two foster children, Betty Harmon and Ellen Harmon; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Savilla and Bernice; two daughters, Arlene Tarzwell and Sharon Warbington; granddaughter, Rachael Ann Tarzwell; brother, Neil Tarzwell; and two sisters, Beryl Eldred and Ruth Shoenfeldt.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2007, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Cheboygan, with Pastor George Dronen officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Cheboygan Seventh Day Adventist Church Building Fund, or the Carp Lake Seventh Day Adventist Church Evangelism Fund. The Christian Funeral Home of Cheboygan is caring for the family. Cheboygan Daily Tribune, April 30, 2007.
