George Phillip Athey was born on June 21, 1934, in Gales Township, Redwood County, Minnesota to Lyle and Mary (Carlson) Athey. He grew up in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School. George later owned and operated the Clinton Feed Mill for a few years. He moved to Minneapolis and spent most of his working years working in maintenance at Control Data before retiring in 1974. George moved to Alexandria and married Rose Carlson.

George enjoyed helping friends and neighbors farm, gardening, fishing, smoking fish and ribs, and living off the land. Most of all, George loved being a grandpa.

Georgie died on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at his home in Lowry at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife, Rose of Lowry; children, Thomas (Lisa) Athey of Milbank, SD, Patrick Athey of Big Stone City, SD, Barbara (David) VanHout of Milbank, SD, Kurt (Tammy) Athey of Brookings, SD, and Lori (Mike) Goergen of Plymouth; twenty-one grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Dotts of Gulf Port, MS, Evie (Earl) Beyer of Starbuck, and Ginny (Rich) Stattelman of Clinton; and many nieces and nephews. George is preceded in death by his son, Brian Carlson; parents, Lyle and Mary; seven brothers; and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
