Kenneth Hanson Kahao, a resident of Allendale Plantation in West Baton Rouge, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 84.

A graduate of Tulane University, he served with distinction as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. When his destroyer was disabled, he returned to earn his Navy wings. From 1946, as a third-generation sugar grower, he assisted his father on the family plantation. In 1976, he was honored to serve as King Sucrose XXIV by the Louisiana Festival and Fair Association for his contribution to the sugar-cane industry. In this he followed in the steps of his father, Martin, chosen King Sucrose in the 1960s.
