David was the youngest son of James Busby and Eliza Harp, both born in Kentucky. They moved from Kentucky to Indiana and back a couple of times. In 1870, the family lived in Worthington, Indiana. They lived in Lyons, Indiana, in the 1880 census. David married Celia Matilda "Tillie" Pirtle first: 27 January 1884: 2nd, Ida B Simons, 28 Aug 1886, 3rd; Flora Jane Keller, 14 June 1888, all in Greene County, Indiana. His first two wives died soon after childbirth, but his son, Charles Emmet Busby (son of Tillie Pirtle Busby) lived. David and Flora Keller Busby had one son, William Alvin Busby.

David and Flora are buried in Prairie Chapel Cemetery, along with both sons, Charles and William, and many of their extended families. Celia Matilda "Tillie" Pirtle and Ida B Simons are both buried in Waggoner Cemetery, Lyons, Greene County, Indiana.
