Ruth Wilda (nee Hart) Smith was born 01 Jan 1905 in either Goetzville or Raber, near DeTour, Chippewa, Michigan, USA. The death certificate indicates birth as DeTour but other official records indicate otherwise. The 1926 Michigan Marriage record indicates Ruth was born in Raber, Michigan; the 1932 birth/death records of Ruth's baby girl Smith indicates Ruth was born in Goetzville, Michigan.

Ruth is the 5th of 11 children born to William Henry Hart and Nellie Harriet "Lillian" Stratton. It has been known that there were 10 children, but a Michigan birth record for a son John Hart (b. 24 May 1904 to William and Lillian in DeTour) was found recently. There is no Michigan death record for the child, but a 1905 photograph where Lillian is holding a very small sleeping Ruth in her lap does not include the child John, so he likely passed away before she was born. Being that the family lived in an extremely rural area of Chippewa County between DeTour and Goetzville, it's likely the child's death was never recorded. Of interest also is that based on the birth of John in late May, Ruth was likely a premature birth ... only 7 months later.

Ruth's parents are:
William Henry Hart (b. 14 Jun 1876 • Riversdale (now Brockton), Greenock Township, Bruce, Ontario, Canada; d. 29 Oct 1940 • Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa, Michigan, USA) and Nellie Harriett "Lillian" Stratton (b. 28 May 1881 • Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, Michigan, USA and twin to William Albert Stratton; d. Jun 1958 • Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa, Michigan, USA).

Ruth's siblings are:
1 - Roy Carl Hart (1900–1980) m. Amber Rosella Skinner
2 - Marion "Marian" Hart (1902-1992) m. Howard Leroy Croker Sr.
3 - Anna "Annie" Harriett Hart (1903–1984) m. John David "Jack" Foster

5 - Lillian S "Lilly" Hart (1907–1960) m. Harry E Amyotte
6 - Wilbert B Hart (1909–1971) m. Bertha Myrtle Harvey

Marie, Chippewa, Michigan, USA to Hubert Mitchell "Bert" Smith (1878–1946) and Alberta May "Bertie" "Bertha" Tripp (1879–1933). Charles d. 04 Mar 1985 in Missoula, Missoula, Montana, USA.
