MEETS DEATH in a WELL
George King, of this place, met with a tragic death last Wednesday forenoon about 9 o'clock, and as a result, another home is saddened, another woman is made a widow and a number of children are fatherless. Mr. King, who has followed the occupation of well digger for a number of years, was called to the Oliver Koogle farm, northeast of town, to clean an open well. A number of men were present to assist him, and upon his entering the well, they urged that he place a rope about his body to assist in drawing him out in case it became necessary. It seems that he laughed at the idea and descended into the well by holding to a rope fastened to the platform. After getting to the bottom, he started to climb out, and when about half way up, he left loose his hold on the rope and fell backward into the well. It was with difficulty that a ladder was obtained and a man lowered into the well to get a rope about the man's body that he might be drawn to the surface. When finally brought out, Mr. King was dead. Coroner R.R. Richison, of Van Wert, was notified and upon investigation, gave it as his opinion that the man's death was due to gaseous vapors and not to drowning, as no water was found in the lungs. The unfortunate man was the father of a large family of children, who with the mother are left in very poor circumstances. The remains were taken to the home of his father at Dull, and the funeral services will be held Friday morning at Greenbriar. Burial in the Greenbriar Cemetery.

The deceased is survived by a father and mother, Mr. and Mr. J.W. King [confused with Joseph his brother], three brothers, Philip, of Pleasant Township, Miller county, Indiana, David, of Dull and Joseph, of Spencer Street, Van Wert.
