Abram T. Card served as Sergeant and Jr. 2d Lt in Co H, 1st Ala Inf Rgt. The men were recruited from Barbour, Lowndes, Macon, Pike, Talladega, Tallapoosa, and Wilcox counties.
Serving as Sergeant, was captured, Island No. 10, April 8, 1862, sent to Camp Butler, Springfield, IL, as a POW, then sent from there to Vicksburg, MS, Sept 23, 1862, to be exchanged. The regiment then rendezvoused at Jackson, Miss., having lost 150 by death in prison, 150 by casualties since and during the siege of Island Ten. In May, 1863, he was elected 2nd LT. They were ordered to Port Hudson, LA, on the Mississippi where they participated in the siege there. "Here 6500 Confederates held 30,000 Union troops May 21 until July 8, 1863. Fall of Port Hudson opened river, hastening fall of Confederacy. " After the surrender at Port Hudson, the privates were paroled and the officers kept in prison till the peace. He was sent from Port Hudson to New Orleans on the Steamer "Suffolk", then confined at the Customs House there until Sept 20th, 1863 when he was sent North on the Steamer 'Clinton'. On Sept 29, 1863, he arrived at Ft Columbus, New York Harbor and was sent on to Johnson's Island, Ohio, on that date. He remained there until Mar 21, 1865, when he was transferred to Point Lookout, MD for exchange. His name appears as a signature to an Oath of Allegiance to the United States, subscribed to at Fort Delaware, DE, June 12, 1865.
