Norman Allen "Buddy" Wilcoxen, 75, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2007, in Smithville, Texas, with his family at his side. He was born February 16, 1932, in Glen Flora, Texas, the son of Arthur John and Ivy Ethelyn Frankum Wilcoxen.

He was a retired Baptist minister, and also worked for the Lower Colorado River Authority in La Grange.

Buddy attended Tomball and Gladewater High Schools, Baylor University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Texas Lutheran University.

He was ordained as a Baptist minister in Tomball, Texas, in 1949. In 1953, he married Nettie Frances Hodge and began a family: daughter Lucinda "Cindy" and son David.

In more than 40 years as a country preacher, Brother Buddy made countless friends and spread the gospel to congregations in the Texas towns of Sutherland Springs, Manchaca, San Gabriel, Oak Hill, Victoria, Smiley, and Bastrop.

Buddy was known for his quick wit and quick smile, easy uproarious laughter, generous spirit, and the warm, genuine regard he felt for his fellow man. He was also known for his musical gifts: a powerful, resonant singing voice and skillful piano playing. He performed for many churches on special occasions and at revivals.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Buddy served his community in other ways. While living in Smiley, he served on the City Council for three years, acted as a scout master for the Smiley Boy Scouts for seven years, served one term as president of the Smiley PTA and provided color commentary for the Smiley Bantams football team.

After his retirement from the ministry, he was a volunteer with the Gladewater Meals on Wheels program and became a certified ombudsman with the State Long Term Care program. When interviewed by the local newspaper regarding his volunteer activities, he expressed his philosophy this way: "To whom much is given, much is expected. Time is God's gift to me. Time then, is my gift to others. I like to see people happy. I love to laugh and help others to laugh."

In his free time, Buddy was an avid student of Texas and Civil War history, played golf, read extensively and wrote poetry. In his later years he would faithfully send birthday and anniversary greetings to family and friends, many times including a personalized poem to mark the occasion.
