Ella Cordelia Gallashaw Canty, 88, widow of Eugene Canty, died May 9, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.

Born June 15, 1915, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Matthew D. Gallashaw Sr. and Rosa Brown Gallashaw. She grew up in the Dalzell community and was educated in the Sumter County schools. She was a lifelong Presbyterian, growing up in the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA). She retired from the housekeeping department at Tuomey Healthcare System.

Survivors include one stepson, Aaron (Dorothy) Abram of Brooklyn, NY; one daughter, Ella A. (Brad) Bradford of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Victoria Gallashaw; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three husbands, Syrenius Abram, Ernest Montgomery and Eugene Canty; two brothers, Emmett and Matthew Gallashaw; three sisters Ethel Pearson, Anzeline J. Davis and Estelle Porcher; one son, Emmett Abram; two stepsons, Albert and Earl Abram; and one granddaughter LaTonja A. Lanier.

The wake service will be held from 7 to 8 pm today in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter. The remains will be placed in the church at 1 pm Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Thursday from the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA), 4620 Queen Chapel Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Dr. Lutrelle Rainey Sr. officiating minister, assisted by Elder S.J. Isaac. Burial will be in Ebenezer Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery, Dalzell.

Pallbearers will be United Presbyterian Men and friends of the family. Floral bearers will be United Presbyterian Women. The funeral procession will leave at 1:15 pm from the home of her daughter Ella A. Bradford, 1720 Gafton Circle, Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter.

The family requests that instead of flowers donations be made to the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 4620 Queen Chapel Road, Dalzell, SC 29040.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
