LE ROY -- Joseph Winkles, 101, of Le Roy, a retired longtime area farmer, died this morning (May 19, 1992) at Stacyville Community Rest Home in Stacyville, Iowa, where he had resided 10 months.

Born Feb. 12, 1891, in Mitchell County, Iowa, he farmed in the Le Roy area for many years before his retirement in 1956. On Oct. 21, 1914, he married Christina Gerhartz in Meyer, Iowa. Mrs. Winkles died in 1981.

Survivors include three daughters, Irene Thies of Santa Maria, Calif., Leona (Mrs. Edward) Carroll of Austin and Edith (Mrs. Louie) Rathai of Owatonna; a son, Marvin of Le Roy; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, a son, two grandchildren, a great-grandchild, seven brothers and three sisters.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Le Roy, with the Rev. Robert Kulas officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Le Roy where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
