MADISON - Carolyn Bufkin, 95, a retired college administrator, died of heart failure Tuesday at her home at St. Catherine's Village.

Services are noon Friday at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Miss Bufkin, a Copiah County native, was a graduate of Whitworth College and Millsaps College.

In 1920, Miss Bufkin moved to Jackson and was employed by the State Department of Education. In 1934, she went to work for Millsaps College as assistant registrar, a position she held for 16 years. The job prepared her for the position of secretary-treasurer of the Feild Cooperative Association, a privately endowed student-loan fund. She retired from there in 1975.

She was a member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church and was active in the Altar Guild, church circle and the Hemingway Bible Class. She also served on a number of committees.

Miss Bufkin was a member of several civic organizations including the Pilot Club, the Jackson Opera Guild, the Jackson Music Association and the American Association of University Women. She was active in charitable fund drives, including the United Way. One of her most avid organizational interests for almost 30 years was in the Central Rose Society, where she served as both president and public relations chairman for a number of years.

In 1969, she was selected "Boss of the Year" by the Jackson Chapter of American Business Women's Association.

She was a wonderful loving person," said her nephew, C. I. Allen of Jackson. "She made a tremendous number of friends through Millsaps and through the Feild Cooperative.

"She loved all of her nieces and nephews and was very close to all of her family," he said. "She would always take care of all of us. She was a sweet, loving aunt."

Miss Bufkin lived with Rebecca Bufkin Phillips for many years.

"She lived with my parents before I was born and she was still living with my mother when she sold the house in 1963," said Phillips of Yazoo City. "She was almost like a second mother to me. She was really a fine person. She was one of the most loyal people I have ever known, loyal to her family, loyal to her friends and loyal to her church. Anything she did, she did wholeheartedly."

Other survivors include: sister, Alma Bufkin Conner of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church or to Millsaps College.
