2 Pittsboro Men Killed When Train Rams Truck Into Office

C. H. Waters, George Ward Victims of Accident

McDaniel Freight Line Truck Skidded Into Path of Fast Mail Train on Icy Crossing

The first snowfall last Thursday resulted in the death of Carl "Tidy" Waters, age 66, and George Ward, age 67, both of Pittsboro, when a fast mail train on the Peoria & Eastern railroad struck a stalled McDaniel Freight Line truck and sent it hurling into the office of the Pittsboro Lumber Company Thursday noon.

Cameron Burns of Crawfordsville, driver, approached the crossing from the south and attempted to stop the truck for the crossing. The truck skidded onto the track and stopped in the path of the approaching train, which was a half hour late. Mr. Burns jumped from the cab and escaped injury.

Mr. Ward, a retired New York Central railroader, was serving as substitute mail carrier and had taken the mail from the post office to the customary hook near the track for non-stop pickup. He had been in the office and had just stepped outside when the accident occurred.

According to Coroner F. N. Wright of Stilesville, the cab of the truck became disconnected and is believed to have struck Ward. The train struck the truck loaded with freight and threw it against the south side of the office. All windows in the office were broken and debris and steel pipe showered upon Mr. Waters, who was working in the office. The rear wheels of the truck were thrown through the side of the lumber shed about forty feet from where the truck had hit the office. In the meantime, the cab had headed east down the railroad track, but was stopped by a bystander.

Mr. Ward suffered a crushed skull and several broken bones and died instantly. Mr. Waters was taken by ambulance to the Methodist hospital by Charles Blessing and Theodore Ross but died before they reached the hospital. Robert Dickover of Tipton, who had been manager of the lumber company about two months, also was in the office but escaped serious injury.

Mr. Waters was the son of Phillip and Eliza Waters and began working with his father as a carpenter in Pittsboro at an early age. He had worked at the lumber company for many years and was also a contractor. He was a member of the Pittsboro Masonic lodge.

Ne married Miss Eva Schenck, who is well known under her pen name, "Tiny Mite," and they were the parents of one daughter, Mrs. Mary Reynolds, of Pittsboro, who survives with the widow. Also surviving are three grandchildren and a brother, George Waters, of California.

Funeral services were held in the McConnaha Funeral Home, Sunday afternoon, with the Rev. Allen Rice in charge. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery at Brownsburg.
