A Summerville resident for 29 years, he was born in Georgia on Nov. 16, 1943, the son of the late Stephen and Sarah Bowen. He was an Eagle Scout and served as a leader for the boy Scouts. He graduated Mercer University in Macon, Ga. in 1965 and Walter F. George School of Law in 1967 where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity Alpha Zeta Chapter and Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity.
He served in Vietnam as a Captain in the Army as Military Intelligence in 1969. While in Spartanburg he was a member of the Lions Club and the F.A.C.T. Association. He belonged to the Rotary Club in Charleston, and served as President of the Estates Planning Council. He was on the Charleston Orchestra Board and was a member of the South Carolina Bar Association. He belonged to St. George's Episcopal Church in Summerville where he was treasurer, layreader, usher and on the Vestry.
His business career was in Trust and Estates, which began in Spartanburg with The Citizens' and Southern Bank of South Carolina and Bank of America in Charleston. He began and served as President of First Southeast Fiduciary Trust services in Charleston and was Vice President of First Federal Bank since 1997.
He loved being with his family and traveling. He and his beloved wife Mary Ellen have been together for 44 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son David and daughter-in-law Pok Cha Bowen of Summerville, a daughter Mary Katharine Bowen of Brooklyn, N.Y. and a granddaughter Katharine Bowen of Summerville.
