Minnie began her education in Suwannee County. After her family relocated to Broward County, she attended Carter G. Woodson Elementary School and graduated from Dillard High School. Minnie continued her education and received several degrees from Broward Community College, the Sheridan Vocational College and the Urban League of Broward County. She passed the State Board Examination and became a Certified Nursing Assistant in 2003, Just before discovering her life changing illness.
Minnie was converted at an early age and joined the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church of Oakland Park, Florida. She later moved her membership to the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Oakland Park, Florida under the leadership of the Reverend Joe L. Lewis, Sr. where she was a very dedicated member. Minnie was a Deaconess, a past President and member of the #1 and #2 Usher Boards, one of the Directors of our Youth Ministry, Vice President of the Hospitality Ministry, Assistant Sunday School Teacher for Class #1 and the head cook and organizer of our Kitchen Ministry.
Minnie Lee Keys married Arnold Mathis (1964-1978). This union was blessed with five children. April 11, 1986 she married her soul mate, David DeSouza.
Minnie worked several years and served on different Civic Organizations such as: Washington Park Homeowners Association, Sunshine Health Center Inc. and the African American Hollywood Advisory Board.
Minnie departed this life on August 8, 2005.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving husband David DeSouza, Hollywood, Florida; sons: Timothy Keys, Miami, Florida; Arnold Mathis, Jr. Hollywood, Florida; Steven (Wanda) Mathis, Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Ronny Gollob, Trinidad; daughters; Michelle Mathis and Debra DeSouza, Fort Lauderdale, Cynthia Gadist (Hollywood, Florida) and Michelle DeSouza (Venezuela); three brothers: Arthur (Diane) Keys and Victri Keys, Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Gary (Barbara) Keys, Miami, Florida; nine sisters: Lucille (Calvin) Sapp, Evelyn (Joseph) Johnson, Mary Durham, Sylvia Keys, Erlene (Chris) Parker, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida ; Sheila Keys, Orlando, Florida, Eartha (Roger) Singh, Sunrise, Florida and Varlorie Keys and Sherry Hilton, Coral Springs, Florida, there are twenty-three grand children; two great grand children; very special aunts, uncles, cousins, sorrowing relatives and friends.
