San Jose Evening News, Mon. Nov. 19, 1894. "Andrew Jackson Blessington, the gambler, is dead. He died at the County infirmary last Friday. The deceased was well known to California sports, he having been a prominent figure about gambling tables during the greater part of his life. At one time in his early life he followed school teaching, but in 1860 began his career at gambling in Nevada. Blessington often related how, early in the sixties, Mark Twain, who then began his journalistic career on the Virginia City Enterprise, played in a poker game with him and the journalist lost heavily. Andy was never forgiven and Mark Twain wrote him up as the 'Slick Gambler' in 'Roughing It.' Blessington was 71 years old and a native of Ireland. His remains were buried at the Infirmary Cemetery."
