4239 Private A D Fincher, C Company, 1st Battalion the Manchester Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Gibraltar and was in Natal by 7 Oct 1899. The battalion was moved up to Ladysmith, and was present with General French at the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 (11 men killed & 31 wounded). The battalion was in Ladysmith throughout the siege, and on 6 Jan 1900 during the great attack, held Caesar's Camp against a determined assault (33 killed, 41 wounded). Private Fincher died of debility at the Intombi military hospital, Ladysmith. He was buried in Intombi cemetery. He is also commemorated on the Manchester Regiment Boer War memorial St Ann's Square, Manchester, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/194361/) and on the Manchester Regiment Boer War memorial plaque in Manchester Cathedral, Victoria Street, Manchester, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/70041/).
