4239 Private A D Fincher, C Company, 1st Battalion the Manchester Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Gibraltar and was in Natal by 7 Oct 1899. The battalion was moved up to Ladysmith, and was present with General French at the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 (11 men killed & 31 wounded). The battalion was in Ladysmith throughout the siege, and on 6 Jan 1900 during the great attack, held Caesar's Camp against a determined assault (33 killed, 41 wounded). Private Fincher died of debility at the Intombi military hospital, Ladysmith. He was buried in Intombi cemetery.
