William Clement "Bill" Scopes died Thursday, July 14, 2016, at his home in Guntersville, Alabama, of congestive heart failure. He was a resident of Baton Rouge for many years.
Bill was born in Houston, Texas, on March 6, 1936, to John T. Scopes, the defendant in the famous "Scopes Monkey Trial" and Mildred Walker Scopes.
Bill went to St. John's High School in Shreveport where he lettered in football. He attended Louisiana State University and graduated from Louisiana University in Lafayette where he received a degree in business. He worked in insurance managerial positions with INA and Chubb in Louisiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, Tennessee and Alabama. He served eight years in the Navy reserves and was a big fan of the LSU Tigers.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jackie Pegues Scopes; a son, Richard; a daughter, Deborah; a brother, John; 3 grandsons & 1 granddaughter; and one niece and one nephew. Bill is also survived by his friend of 55 years, Bob Barry of Baton Rouge.
Bill was memorialized at a Mass of Intention at St. William Catholic Church in Guntersville on Friday, July 15th.
