Duwain E. Baer, 84, of Amarillo died Monday August 17, 2020. Duwain was born February 5, 1936 in Dumas to Christine and Arthur Baer.

He was a true cowboy, riding barebacks, saddle broncs and bulls. He later concentrated on team roping and teaching kids how to rope and ride. He and a close friend, Tommy Lew Record, designed and built the rodeo arena in Dumas and the first rodeo was held there in 1974. He was involved in a serious team roping accident a year later in that arena that changed his life. The arena was just recently dedicated to he and his friend and renamed The Baer & Record Rodeo Arena.

Duwain lived a life filled with many adventures from his younger cowboy years, one of which was decided over the flip of a coin when he and a friend decided to stay and work on a ranch in New Mexico through the winter instead of returning home to Dumas. He worked on a host of different ranches in Texas and New Mexico including Philmont Scout Ranch, McDaniels Cattle Company, Turkey Track Ranch, Sneed Ranch and last, The Long X Ranch.

He loved country music and was a very good dancer, especially at waltzing. He was especially good with horses and his favorite horse, Blue Creek Blue, wouldn't let anyone ride him except for Duwain. He was a very loving father and was rarely seen in the town of Dumas without his son Beau by his side. As Duwain raised Beau, the two made many memories through horseback rides and the rodeos that Beau entered. Duwain was at every rodeo and pulled every rope and riggin' for Beau until Beau left for college.

Duwain was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice Rucker, his parents, his firstborn, a daughter - Ray Lynn Cline and a grandson, Greg Cline.

Duwain was later married to Rosetta Ann Baker from Phillips, TX for over 20 years and they had one son, Beau.

He married the love of his life, Peggy, on September 12, 1987. They were married almost 33 years until his death.

He is survived by his wife Peggy; three children, son Beau Baer and wife Shirlene, stepson Tracy Gordin, stepdaughter Val Marie and husband Larry Dutcher; seven grandchildren; Krislyn Perkins, Creede Baer, Chloe Baer, Shelby Dutcher, Katie Dutcher Sedlacek, Levi Cline and Jessica Cline; one sister Charlyn Baker, one brother, Dr. A.L. Baer, six great grandsons and a host of nieces and nephews.

A barn party complete with music from Bob Wills, Hank Williams Sr., Merle Haggard, Waylon & Willie and shots of Old Charter to toast and celebrate his life will be scheduled at a future date.

Arrangements and cremation are by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage.
