Howard Bruns was a son of Fred William Bruns and Harriet Darlene Cook Bruns. He married Doris Maricle on February 17, 1940, in Rupert, Idaho. She survives. They were parents of two sons, Winston & Stanley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Elvin Bruns and Loren Bruns and one sister, Eltha Given.
