Betty Jane was the youngest of her parents' three daughters; her sisters were Lois D. and Dorothy Lillian. Her family appear in the 1940 census in Chicago; her father Erwin is a photoengraver; her sister Lois, age 24, works as a bank clerk for a mail order business and sister Dorothy, 18, works in a law office as a secretary. Betty is 14 and in school - she later graduated from Chicago's Calumet High School.

On 2 October 1948, Betty married Robert Dwight Hedrick. The couple appears in the 1950 census in Chicago living at 7315 East End and he is the general manager for an insurance company. They had three children: a daughter, Robert Dwight Jr., and an infant boy who died two days after his birth in November 1953 and is buried at Oak Forest Cemetery in Chicago.

In her last years, Betty lived at Fairwinds, a senior living facility in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
