Jasper Denton Benson, 91, of Durham, North Carolina, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 14, 2021. Mr. Benson was born in Johnston County, North Carolina. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sallie Harper Benson of 73 years, his daughter Joanne Benson of the home and his eight brothers and sisters; Gertrude Bowden, Colon Benson, Gerald Benson, Willadean Benson Byrd, Odell Benson, Benny Ray Benson, Shirley Faye Byrd and Margaret Johnson.

Surviving are his three children Janet B. Marks, Sharon B. Hensley (Larry), and Terry B. Chambers (Sid). Grandchildren are Jay Marks (Sarah), Kerry Hensley, Kortney Hensley, Zachary Chambers (Amanda), and Andrew Chambers (Brooke). He has one great-granddaughter, Sasha Marks.

Mr. Benson worked for Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company for twenty-two years in the stamp room. He then worked for Southland Corporation and managed the Chapel Hill 7-11 Store for 12 more years before retiring in 1983. Mr. Benson was an outstanding employee for Southland and was always friendly and courteous to his many customers as they visited the store. He was part of the Chapel Hill community on a daily basis.

Mr. Benson was a life-long member at Calvary Baptist Church in Durham until he was no longer able to attend. Mr. Benson loved his family and especially his grandchildren and attended many of their school and community activities. He enjoyed working in his yard and maintained a beautiful vegetable garden for years.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hudson Funeral Home in Durham. The family will receive friends and family on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Craig Phelps of Gorman Baptist Church. Flowers are acceptable. The family is thankful and appreciative for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Interment will be at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens following the funeral.
