Martha Sue Mobley, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Winton, California, her daughters by her side.

Sue was born in Bluffton, Arkansas to parents George Lee Carpenter and Anna Pearl (Mathis) Carpenter. She was a middle child with two older brothers (George Lee Carpenter, Jr. and Kenneth Joe Carpenter) and two younger sisters (Anna Ruth Conner and Janey Louise Laquey).

Sue graduated from Fouche Valley High School in 1949 as valedictorian and honor student, then completed her B.S. in Education at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in three years (subsequently completing two master's degrees in Education). Sue spent the majority of her 60-year teaching career in South San Francisco, California where she taught English and Reading.

She was known to generations as the "indomitable Mrs. Mobley" - teaching her students the importance of hard work, integrity and the value of a good education. Sue was a friend, mentor and champion to many.

In 1956, Sue married her high school sweetheart, George Mobley, and spent many years moving around California following George's construction projects for Guy F. Atkinson Company. In 1993, after 25 years in San Mateo, George and Sue retired to their almond orchards in Winton, CA to farm full time.

Sue was an active member of Atwater UMC, Gateway A's and the Red Hats and enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, entertaining, running church events, and singing and socializing with the church choir. Every summer she looked forward to hosting her grandchildren at "Camp Winton".

Sue was preceded in death by her husband, George Mobley, but leaves behind two daughters, Deanna (David) Bing, and Connie (Charlie) Mobley-Ritter; five grandchildren, Christopher (Andrea) Bing, Katie (Matt) Lee, Molly (Marco) Torres, Devon (Cyril Bucher) Mobley-Ritter and James N. M. Ritter; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who fondly remember their Aunt Sue.

A celebration of Sue's life will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021, 11 a.m. at Atwater United Methodist Church, 2550 Linden St., Atwater, CA.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be sent directly to them in anticipation of establishing a scholarship in Sue's name.
