Thomas Marion Provence was Born in Alabama (I believe Madison County) Aug 18, 1833. His father was Thomas Provence (born 1793 in North Carolina)and Mary Stokes (born 1793 in Georgia) Thomas moved to Texas with his parents and at least 2 brothers (Frazier Vandalia Provence and James A Provence)around 1856. They first lived in Titus County Texas for a few years. While in Titus County Thomas and his 2 brothers joined the Confederate Army and served in the 19th Texas Infantry, Company G. Before the Civil War Thomas married ( about 1859) Amanda M. Laird. Amanda was the daughter of his brothers (Fraziers) wife Rebecca from her first husband (Turner Laird). Amanda is buried next to Thomas in this cemetery and both have headstones. Thomas spent most of his adult life in Texas living in Wise County Texas. Several books from Wise County Genealogy groups say Thomas and his brother Frazier were well known as Sheep ranchers and both are also listed as being among some of the first settlers in Wise County Texas. Thomas and Amanda had 6 children that I know about (Cassanna Vandalia Provence (Coffman), Zebulin Edwin Provence, John Marion Provence, Mary E. Provence, Rebecca B. Provence (Baker) and Arthur Frazier Provence). Many of their descendants still live in Wise County Texas. The photo on this site with Thomas and Amanda together was obtained from a great grandson of Thomas and Amanda. The person got the photo from his grandmother Cassana Vandalia (Provence) Coffman who is one of Thomas and Amandas daughters. The Provence descendant I received the photo from is in his early 90's and still lives in Wise County Texas.
