David Floyd Dandurand
October 28, 1944 - June 24, 2021

David Floyd Dandurand, longtime resident and educator at Lake Quinault, died on June 24, 2021, at Mason County Hospital in Shelton.
He was born on October 28, 1944, in Bremerton, Washington to Gene Floyd and Shirley Elizabeth (Hadley) Dandurand, and grew up in Burien, Washington.

From 1966 to 1969 he served in the US Navy as a Seabee. He completed a tour of duty in Vietnam, spending 23 months In Country providing ICOR support and leading night patrol. Upon his return, he attended Western Washington University and earned a bachelor's degree in K-12 Education with emphasis in Botany. He earned a master's degree in Computer Science from Oregon State University in 1989.

He moved to Quinault in 1975, and on March 31, 1979, was married to Patricia Kay Torres. Mr. D., as his students called him, was a devoted teacher at Lake Quinault High School for 31 years, retiring in 2006. He taught many subjects, primarily math, science, computers, and photography, and motivated students to pursue a college degree. He felt his greatest accomplishment was getting students ready for college, sometimes teaching more than one AP course at the same time. He had the ability to teach many different ways until a student got it. He coached Volleyball and served as advisor to the school annual, computer science club, math bowl, and was instrumental in establishing the computer lab and the greenhouse at the school.

A modern renaissance man, David was a lifelong learner with many interests and whatever interest he had at the time, it commanded his full attention. He thrived in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. In high school and college, he was a gifted gymnast, specializing on the rings. In 2000, he and Patty pursued square dancing with his typical enthusiasm and enjoyed it into retirement. He loved to cook and to eat. Over the years he relished many hobbies such as skiing (he served on the ski patrol), fly fishing, fly tying, hiking, golfing, hobi cats, cycling, wine making, traveling, gardening and orcharding. His orchard eventually consisted of over 150 trees, many of which were varieties he had collected and grafted to rootstocks himself. He once found a lone roadside apple tree, determined it was unique and delicious, harvested scion wood, grafted it, and registered it as the "Patty Kay". In later years he loved Public TV, History Channel, and old westerns.

Surviving relatives include his wife of 42 years, Patricia of Shelton; a son, John, and his wife Lynda, of Bellingham; a daughter, Paula and her husband Jim of Fox Island; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and a sister, Susan (Bill). He will also be remembered and missed by his nieces, nephew, cousins, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and of course, his faithful dog.

An urn committal with military honors will be held at 12:00 noon on, July 14, 2021, at the Lake Quinault Cemetery. A celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 PM at the Community of Christ Church in Neilton.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary.
