Her father was a Muslim surgeon, her mother was a Christian of British origin, who taught music. She attended at an all-girl national school where she was educated in English and Arabic. At the age of sixteen she met Sadat and they married one year later in 1949. Their union produced four children. During Sadat's presidency and following his death, she was an outspoken advocate for women's rights and humanitarian causes for children. She earned her Master's degree in Arabic Literature from the University of Cairo and later received her doctorate in Comparative Literature. She wrote the books "A Woman of Egypt" in 1987 and "My Hope for Peace" in 2009. She died from cancer.
