John Wesley King was born about 1837 in Madison County, IN, the son of William King and Nancy Ann Owens. He married Mary Catherine Hendricks Jan. 11, 1859. They had three children: Nancy Lucinda, William, and Elizabeth Angeline. On Oct. 28, 1864 he enlisted in the 17th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and died Jan. 23, 1865 in Paducah, KY of typhoid fever. He was buried in the post cemetery, but his and other bodies were later removed to Mound City National Cemetery.
