Born March 2, 1924, in Karlovac, Yugoslavia, he spent his youth in Zagreb. In 1941, he and his family escaped the German invasion and traveled to Brazil. In 1942, he came to the U.S. as a student at Northwestern University. After a few months, he joined the U.S. Army and after Basic Training, he joined the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. He took part in the drop on Normandy, the invasion of Holland, and the defense of Bastogne.
After the war, he returned to Northwestern and received his BS in Physics. He married Harriet Jane Archer in 1951 and returned to Northwestern for graduate study, receiving an MS in Physics in 1952. He accepted a position at the Naval Research Lab, Washington, D.C. and worked there for 14 years.
In 1966, he accepted a position as a Member of the Technical Staff at the RCA David Sarnoff Research Lab, Princeton, NJ, where he worked until 1987. After his retirement, he was a consultant for six years for the NASA Langly Research Lab, Hampton VA and Bellcore Research Lab, Morristown, NJ.
He is the author or coauthor of over 50 technical papers and 25 US Patents in the fields of pn-junction theory, electrolumi-nescence, and fiber optics. He was a member of the American Physical Society, IEEE and Sigma XI.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet Jane Ladany of Willow Valley, and will be lovingly missed by two sons, John E. Ladany of Montclair, NJ and Charles A. Ladany of Doylestown, PA; one daughter, Susan L. Quake of Glenmoore, PA; one granddaughter, and three grandsons.
