The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Frederick J. Hawke (ASN: 1899870), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 325th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, A.E.F., near St. Juvin, France, 15 October 1918. When his company was temporarily held up by severe machine-gun fire, Sergeant Hawke led a patrol in an attack on an enemy machine-gun, working his way behind the gun and rushing it, killing one of the crew, wounding another and taking three prisoners.
