Merlin William Goodwin Sr.
14 JULY, 1929 – 9 JANUARY, 2011

Merlin "Buddy" William Goodwin Sr. was born on July 14, 1929 in Artesia, California and passed away quietly with his family by his side on January 9, 2011 at 7:30 PM. Buddy started his logging career at his father's sawmill in Hoaglin Valley at the young age of 14. At the age of 19 he joined the Navy during the Korean War. He graduated top of his class as an engineman and was honorably discharged after serving four years. He spent the rest of his career doing what he loved; being a gypo logger in Humboldt County. He had a passion for cattle and on the side spent his spare time ranching. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife Billie of 54 years; daughter Tamera Collins and her husband Todd; sons Merlin Jr., Rocky and his wife Sarah, and Gary and his wife Stephanie; brother David; sisters Dorothy Newmaker and Rosalie Chandler; eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Merlin Lester and Marie Dorothy Goodwin; and sister Barbara Boatwright. A memorial service will be held in honor of Buddy at noon on January 29, 2011 at his and Billie's residence located at 875 Liscom Hill Road near Blue Lake. Please dress casual for that is what Buddy would have wanted. "In My Eyes" In my eyes, my dad meant the world to me, He was the one I looked up to and wanted to be, It filled my heart with pride to have such a wonderful father, I was very blessed to be his one and only daughter, I always looked forward in going to see him with my three year old twins at my side, As he loved playing and feeding the animals with them outside, He was so strong and never let on he was neither hurt nor aching, Just as he would want me to be now, even though my heart is breaking, He was supposed to live forever and by my superman, But now I will carry on his legacy as best that I can, And that is why my dad's passing took me by surprise, Because he was supposed to live forever, In My Eyes.
