Dr. W.F. Atwell, who was actively engaged in the practice of his profession in this city for thirteen years and until about a year ago, passed away very suddenly about 6 o’clock, Monday evening at the home of his wife’s mother, Mrs. Celia Grover, at Amherst, death being the result of heart failure brought about by a sudden stroke of apoplexy. During the past ten years Dr. Atwell was troubled more or less with a severe pain in the back attacks rendering him uncomfortable for several days at a time. About a year ago he retired from active duties as a physician in the effort to recuperate, if possible. The much needed rest proved beneficial to a certain extent and a few months ago, early in December, he left for Big Heart, Oklahoma, where he spent the winter, the change bringing some apparent relief. He returned a few weeks ago and after settling some business affairs in the city, left with his wife for Amherst, about ten days ago, expecting to enjoy the summer on the farm there and continue his rest.
William F. Atwell was the oldest of a family of seven children. He was born at the corner of Broadway and Twenty-second Streets in New York City, on Feb. 28, 1849, and had recently passed his fifty-eighth birthday.
Dr. Atwell was the father of two children, who with their mother, survive, they being William G. Atwell, a druggist of Watertown, and Mrs. J.L. Walker of this city.
The Funeral was held at 2 o’clock this Wednesday afternoon from the Grover residence at Amherst.
