At the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Dmytro volunteered to help the Ukrainian military.
On July 10, he entered the territory uncontrolled by Ukraine, the
Severodonetsk town, and was captured by separatists and Russian militants. There is evidence that Dmytro was brutally tortured.
On July 22, the Ukrainian armed forces liberated Severodonetsk from the Russian occupiers.
Only two years later, after questioning numerous witnesses, it was found out that Dmytro had been shot and thrown into the river a few days before the liberation of Severodonetsk in 2014. He was later buried as unknown.
