Julia B. Basile was born Giulia Giudita (Julia Judith in English) Bernacchi on Jan. 26, 1880, in the village of Serino in the southern Italian province of Avellino (Campania Region), the daughter of Pietro and Palma (DeFeo) Bernacchi. Her mother died and her father, a carabinieri (Italian National Police), was forced to send her to a convent to be educated, as he traveled frequently due to his profession. When she was about 18, he sent her to America for a better life. The actual voyage and immigration arrival are unknown.

Julia settled in Boston, Massachusetts, and became a tailoress. On Feb. 21, 1902, she married Emilio M. Basile in Boston and they would have six children. Around 1918, they moved to Medford and lived there for about 20 years. She then lived in Somerville for a short time, then moved to Arlington, living with some of her adult children. She died in Arlington on Jan. 10, 1964, sixteen days before her 84th birthday, and was buried next to her husband, Emilio M. Basile, in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.
