Rufus K Burgess was b between 24 Aug 1850 & 5 Oct 1850, Matinicus Island, the s/o Samuel C Burgess & Thankful C Phinney. [per date of 1850 census & death age of 51.] He d 5 Oct 1901, Westbrook, Me at the age of 51 from consumption.

Rufus married Ruth D Allen on 4 July 1871, Vinalhaven, married by Rev Wm Henry Littlefield. Ruth was b 25 Jan 1847, Winterport, Me, the d/o Ira Leonard Allen & Eunice P Cole. She d 3 May 1925, Westbrook, Me.

Rufus & Ruth had 4 children:
1) Herbert L Burgess: Apr 1876, Vinalhaven - 18 Nov 1877, Vinalhaven, Buried with grandparents, Samuel C & Thankful Burgess, Carver Cemetery, Vinalhaven.
2) Benjamin Burgess: Dec 1878, Vinalhaven - 17 Jan 1943, Westbrook, Me
3) Abbie Helen Burgess: Nov 1879, Vinalhaven - 28 May 1903, Westbrook, Me
4) Nellie Burgess: 19 Mar 1894, Westbrook - 17 Nov 1896, Westbrook, from diphtheria.

For the 24 Aug 1850 census, his family is residing on Matinicus, but he is not included. Therefore, he was born after that.

In 1856, the infamous story of his sister Abbie taking care of the family at the Matinicus Light House occured during 4 weeks of storms while his father was away. Family history has always stated that it was the girls who remained along with their invalid mother. In true fashion of the time, Rufus was probably away with his father, either helping or "learning the trade," even at the young age of 6. Not uncommon for the time.

In 1860, 9-year-old Rufus is residing with his parents in Rockland, Me.

In 1870, 18-year-old Rufus is residing with his parents on Vinalhaven where he is working as a stone cutter.

In 1880, 28-year-old Rufus & 34-year-old Ruth are on Vinalhaven where he is working as a granite cutter. Children are: Benjamin (ae 2) and Abbie H (ae 6 mo). They are residing with his parents.

In 1900, 54-year-old Rufus and 52-year-old Ruth are in Westbrook where he is working as a day laborer. Rufus cites birth of Feb 1846, Ruth cites birth of May 1848. She cites having had 4 children, only 2 of whom are alive for the census. With them is Abbie (ae 20, b Oct 1879, no occupation) and Benjamin (ae 21, b Dec 1878, silk dyer.) [Note: many individuals did not want to divulge correct birthdates, especially for the 1900 census. Not only are the birth dates for Rufus & Ruth incorrect, the number of years married is also incorrect.]

Death Record: Rufus K Burgess died 5 Oct 1901, Westbrook, Me at the age of 51 years. Born on Matinicus, he was the s/o Samuel Burgess (b Hope, stone cutter) and Thankful Phinney (b Cape Cod). He was a married stone cutter. Cause of death: consumption.

By 1910, Ruth had returned to Vinalhaven (at least for the census) where she is residing with her son, Benjamin.

In 1920, 72-year-old widow Ruth Burgess is back in Westbrook. Residing with her is her 42-year-old son Benjamin who is working as a dyer in the silk mill.
