Fresnan Is Killed In Accident On Alaska Railroad
Funeral services are to be held here next week for Ray Layman Coffman, 28, a native Fresnan, who was killed in an accident Wednesday on the Alaska Railroad, by which he was employed.
The United States Government, which operates the railroad, notified his mother, Mrs. Grace Coffman Rogers, of 3018 South Ninth Street, of his death.
Served in the Navy
Coffman lived in Fresno, Selma and Fowler during his early years and enlisted in the navy January 23, 1941, while he was a senior in the Selma High School.
He was on a destroyer in Pearl Harbor during the sneak attack of December 7, 1941, and served in the Pacific throughout World War II. He was on the Phelps, the Helm, and the Gregory during the conflict and took part in many engagements.
He was discharged in Kodiak, Alaska, in July of 1947 and went to work for the railroad without returning to the states.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his father, Homer L. Coffman of Fresno, and a sister, Mrs. Loraine Mitchell of Fresno.
The Lisle Funeral home will make the arrangements for the services.
