Mrs. Delia Newell, relict of the late Anthony H. Newell, died at the family home on North Washington street, Sunday morning at 3:20 o'clock of the infirmities of old age. The passing away of this beloved lady was not unexpected as the angel of death had been hovering near for a week past and those in attendance were momentarily awaiting the visit of the grim reaper. At her bedside when the end came were her sons Patrick Newell, of Bradford, and John Newell, of Pittsburg, and her daughter, Mrs. Kate Coffee, to whom was given the blessed privilege of attending her mother in the declining years of her life.
The deceased, whose maiden name was Delia Burke, was born in County Galway, Ireland, in January, 1815, and was consequently in her 86th year. In 1832 she was united in marriage to Anthony H. Newell, and in the year 1850 the worthy couple removed with their family to this country, settling in Boston, Mass. With the breaking out of the oil excitement they decided to cast their lot with the many who were seeking the oil regions and accordingly took up their residence in Titusville in 1862. Anthony Newell, husband of the deceased, erected and conducted the first cooper shop in the oil regions and later engaged exteusively in the production of oil. He preceded his wife to the grave by about ten years. Fifteen children were born to the couple, eleven having passed to the great beyond. Michael H. Newell, a well known son, died about two years ago in this city.
Mrs. Newell is survived by four children, namely, Mrs. Kate Coffee of Titusville, Mrs. J.R. Snow of New York, Patrick Newell of Bradford and John Newell of Pittsburg. Many grandchildren also mourn the loss of the venerable lady. Daniel O'Day of New York, the Standard Oil magnate, is a son-in-law of the deceased, and will arrive in the city today to attend the funeral, which will take place Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Titus church. The burial will follow in the family burial plot in St. Catherine's cemetery.
Deceased was a woman of excellent qualities of mind who made the world better for having lived in it, and leaves the rich heritage of her many virtues as a blessed memory to her descendants. She was a faithful member of St, Titus church and the poor and the afflicted were the objects of her care and attention throughout her long and useful life.
Mrs. J.H. Snow of New York arrived yesterday too late to see her mother before the end.
