JONESPORT - Leon Roscoe Smith Jr., 91, passed peacefully June 22 at Northern Light Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth. He was born September 30, 1929, the youngest son of Leon R. and Gladys (Kirby) Smith.
He grew up in Jonesport, where at an early age he developed a love for lobster fishing. As a boy, he had his own traps and would catch a tow in his dory from his Dad to his traps, then haul them by rowing from trap to trap and put up his sail for the trip home. His love of the water and fishing never faded. Bud, as all of his friends knew him, enjoyed telling of the biggest halibut he and his brother Robert caught. It was one of the largest caught in town - weighing in with a 400 pounds live weight. Bud attended Jonesport schools and graduated in 1946 at the young age of 16. He lobster fished for a while in his own boat, before enlisting in the Navy in 1948 and was called to active duty for 1 year. Upon returning home, he married Angelena Alley, his wife of 71 years. Together, they belonged to the Beals Advent Christian Church. One of their favorite things to do was to go away for the weekend, which always included antiquing. He will be remembered for his pond full of ducks, his sweet and friendly spirit, his wonderful sense of humor, and his willingness to always help another fisherman in need. Knowing his family would love a place to swim, play, and boat in the summer, he built the family camp at Schoodic, using hand tools alone. It was surely a great gift to his family and a sacrifice of his time and energy, as he rode to and from the lake each day for work. Bud was a member of the Jonesport Lodge #188, where he served as Worshipful Master from 1963-1964 and Senior Deacon from 1965-1972. He had received his 50-year pin. He served on the Planning Board of the town of Jonesport. Additionally, he was one of the original brothers who operated Smith's Lobster after the passing of their father.
Leon "Bud" is survived by his devoted wife, Angelena; his daughter, Patti Carver and husband, Dwight, of Beals; his son, Timmy Smith and wife, Sue, of Sidney; granddaughters, Angela Merchant of Winthrop, MA, Sandi Carver and wife, Suzanne, of Hampden, Kristi Carver-Kenney and husband, Michael Kenney, of Beals, Tricia Carver and husband, Mark Moran, of Hampden, Katie Griffin of Jonesport, and Kai Hatch and husband, Shane, of Owl's Head; grandsons, Seth Griffin and wife, Terra, of Jonesport and Ross Griffin of Cutler; and great-grandchildren, Ella and Maya Carver, Brevan and Makenna Kenney, Cooper, Callie, Caydence, and Casey Moran, Amir Leon Mahmoud, Gabriel Leon Griffin, Solomon and Maggie-June Griffin, and soon to be born Chase Leon Hatch. Bud is also survived by brothers-in-law, Wendell Alley and wife, Joyce and Donnie Alley and friend, Todd Croteau, all of Beals. He was predeceased by a 2 ½ year old daughter, Betty Ann; daughter, June Griffin; and grandson, Toby Jay Carver. Bud was also predeceased by brothers, Raymond and Robert Smith; and sisters, Lucille and Marilyn Smith, all of Jonesport; and brothers-in-law, Harold and Ordman Alley of Beals.
We invite Bud's friends and family to visiting hours 5 - 7 p.m. Friday, June 25, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court Street, Machias. Private services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery.
