Husband of Mary Elizabeth Welch Merritt
J. W. Merritt has a CSA pension application on line in the GA Archives under Grady County. It says he came from Thomas County to Grady county in 1906 and had been drawing a $60 per year pension. He was a farmer and proof of his death on Jan. 8, 1924 in North Carolina is in the pages. The ordinary, Mr. Herring, said that Mr. Merritt died while on a visit to one of his children and the body was returned to Grady County for burial. In the pages, Mr. Merritt says he served 3 years in Company K of the 5th Florida regiment.
