"Mike" was a B-24 "Liberator" pilot during World War II. Completed 38 combat missions, including the ill-fated "Operation Tidal Wave". This was a low-level bombing raid of the heavily defended Romanian oil refinery and storage yards of Ploesti. Received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

Designed an in-air radar system that provided rendezvous directional information to pilots of refueling aircraft. His system was a predecessor of the collision avoidance systems used by today's aircraft. He received the Legion of Merit for his work.
