HISTORY OF LA PRAIRIE - EGGEN & SCHWANKE FAMILY. (from a newspaper clipping)
"Harm J. Eggen with his wife and 2 small daughters Eltje age 13, and Volke age 3 years, left East Fresia, Germany to seek a new home in the USA in September 1850 because they were disatisfied with conditions there. They went from Bremen Harbor, Germany, by sail ship to New Orleans, then up the Mississippi River to Quincy, Illinois and from there to La Prairie. In December 1854 they bought a farm of 50 acres from Wm. Hughes and wife Sarah. This farm after 1830 owened by Harbo Osterman. They at first lived in a log house at north end of the farm, but later built a 2 room frame building near the place where Mr. Ostrmans new house now stands.
In 1851 August Clemens Schwanke, a shoemaker by trade, left Berlin Germany for America, and a little later came to La Prairie. At this time the railroad was being built through La Prairie and there was only one house in La Prairie, a two- story frame building that stood where Mrs. Tenhaeff's modern house now stands; it was a boarding house for transients and for the workmen constructing the railroad.
In March 1858 August Schwanke and Miss Eltje Eggen were married by the Lutheran pastor of the South Prairie Church. These people were all Lutherans and at that time this was the only Lutheran Church in the vicinity. Later they joined the Lutheran Church at the Junction (now Golden). After his marriage Mr. Schwanke built a house, as he had bought lots 6 and 7 in La Prairie. In addition to this house was a room for his shoe shop. To this union 8 children were born, 4 boys and 3 girls; but 6 grew to manhood and womanhood in this house. The last one to marry, Theodore, bought the house after his mother's death, and he and his wife lived in it until he died in June 1930 and it is now owned by his wife, Mrs. Ovelle Schwanke. Christine Schwanke, the oldest daughter died Nov. 10, 1930. Harm Eggen died in 1886 at the age of 83; August Schwanke bought his farm in 1881. The widow, Mrs. Eggen went to live with her daughter and family. Mr. Scwanke died inJUne 1890 and Mrs. Eggen in Feb. 1891. Mrs. Schwanke died in March 1905. The farm which belonged to the Eggen and Scwanke families was next sold to the present owner, Harbo Osterman."
